This blog recounts the inspiring journey of a young Afghan woman who, after the ban on women’s work and education, transforms her grief into determination by discovering programming. Emphasizing resilience and personal growth, she showcases that hope is actively created, and her past experiences become valuable tools in rebuilding her life. It’s a story of courage, transformation, and the unwavering pursuit of dreams.
Some stories begin with hope. Others begin with loss. Mine begins in the space between the two—where darkness tried to settle, but a small spark refused to die.
That spark became the beginning of a journey that changed everything for me.
There was a time when my days followed a familiar rhythm. I would wake up early, get ready for work, and step into a world where I felt capable, useful, and connected. For years, I worked in different roles: teaching English, conducting surveys, and later serving as a Visa Officer in Kabul. I believed that with patience and effort, my future would slowly take shape. I wasn’t a programmer then, not an artist, not someone chasing extraordinary dreams. I was simply a young Afghan woman building her life step by step.
But life has a way of shifting without warning.
The day women were banned from work and education, the world I had built collapsed in a single moment. Everything I relied on—my routine, my progress, my sense of purpose—disappeared overnight. The silence that followed was heavier than I expected. My life felt smaller, my dreams farther away, and my home a place I no longer recognized.
Yet when the world tries to quiet you, something deeper begins to rise from within.
What rose inside me was the refusal to give up. That is how I found programming—not because it was a dream I had long chased, but because it became a doorway back to myself. I started from zero. I didn’t know the terms, the systems, or the language of coding. But every time I opened my laptop, a small voice inside whispered: “You can still grow.”
So I chose growth.
Learning felt overwhelming at times, like climbing a mountain in the dark. But each tiny success, each working line of code, restored a piece of the future I thought I had lost. I learned that knowledge is freedom—one of the only freedoms no one can take away.
As I studied programming, I relied on everything I had built before: my communication skills as an English Instructor, my professionalism as a Visa Officer, my patience and accuracy as a surveyor, and my creativity from courses in drawing, design, and digital arts. I realized that none of my skills were wasted. Every experience, every job, every class I took had given me tools for the future I am now building.
I learned that starting over is not weakness—it is courage.
I learned that pain can open unexpected paths.
I learned that hope isn’t something you wait for—it’s something you create with your own hands.
Now I carry both grief and determination. I mourn the life I lost, but I fight fiercely for the one I am creating. I may not know exactly where the road leads, but I know I am walking forward with strength.
Joining EmpowerHer reminded me that my voice matters. That learning can happen anywhere—in community, in creativity, in shared stories, and in the quiet determination to keep going. It reminded me that I am more than the limits placed on me.
This is not a story of sadness.
It is a story of transformation—of a girl who refused to be quieted.
A girl who is creating light in a world that tried to dim her.
I am still learning.
I am still building.
I am still becoming.
And this path—every step of it—is mine.
