Finding My Direction

This reflection describes how EmpowerHer’s Resume Building Workshop transformed the author’s understanding of her own experiences and achievements. Alongside lessons from The Alchemist and The Little Prince, the workshop helped her gain confidence, recognize her growth, and move forward with purpose as a medical student.

When I participated in EmpowerHer's Resume Building Workshop, it unexpectedly became more than just a class. I learned to view my own experiences in a completely different light. I had always considered a resume as just a simple sheet of paper listing skills and experiences. However, as the workshop progressed, it revealed itself to be something much more significant. To me, it became a way of reflecting on how much I have learned and accomplished, and of giving myself the recognition I deserve.

I learned to express my strengths in words, confidently discuss my development, and frame my experiences as a coherent narrative of personal growth. What started as a technical tutorial surprisingly turned into an inner revelation. The workshop showed me that I do have achievements worth sharing, aspirations worth pursuing, and doors that are truly opening. It taught me to trust my abilities, stay organized, and move toward the future with intention and courage.

Of course, the workshop benefited my practical development; in addition, a couple of books have been emotional and reflective guides throughout my life. The Alchemist and The Little Prince are two that have stayed with me for a long time, and I want to share some of the lessons they’ve taught me.

The Alchemist taught me something unexpected: that following a dream is worthwhile, even when you can’t see where it leads. Santiago’s journey felt familiar. The doubts he faced, the fear of failure, the moments when giving up seemed easier—I’ve been there too. But what really stuck with me was the idea: “When we strive to become better, everything around us becomes better too.” It helped me understand that focusing on my own development is both necessary and valuable. It truly changes things around you. When I sat down to build my resume during the workshop, I kept thinking about that. I didn’t want to play small or hide what I really wanted. I wanted to be honest about my ambitions, even if they felt big.

The Little Prince, in its simple and beautiful way, taught me to look deeper. Instead of focusing only on results or achievements, it reminded me that meaning often comes from care, intention, and connection. The book encouraged me to value the lessons hidden in ordinary experiences, and to see that my journey matters even when it feels quiet or slow. This helped me appreciate the small steps in my life that I used to overlook.

These books have kept me grounded and motivated, while the Resume Building Workshop helped me put my goals into words. Now, as I continue my studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University as a medical student, I carry with me what I learned from both the books and EmpowerHer: the courage to move forward, the intention to shape my own story, and the belief that every step matters.
