Hungry Minds Need Food

A moving reflection on four years without education, this poem captures the quiet grief, resilience, and fading hope of Afghan girls whose dreams have been suspended by oppression. Through powerful imagery, it explores what it means to lose not only classrooms, but time, opportunity, and the words to imagine a different future.

Hungry Minds Need Food

Today, we celebrate the fourth year of deprivation,

The candle is waiting for us, to blow it out,

We blow out the candle, knowing that after its extinction, only darkness remains,

And that is exactly what they want.

We must walk on a dark road,

As if silence has swallowed darkness, and darkness has swallowed silence,

Today marks 1,460 days that we have been imprisoned within walls,

Perhaps I counted wrong, more or less,

We have lost track of numbers,

The pen is broken,

Its ink stands farther away than itself,

The pencils have been sharpened to their very end,

The doors of drawing are not open to us,

I saw the flames of burned notebooks in a corner,

The colors have dried,

The roots of knowledge are thirsty, they need water,

Our minds are hungry, they need food,

Our minds lie asleep in darkness, Not one, not two, But millions of silenced thoughts,

Our ideas have been cut short, trimmed away,

The story is long, But the ink is little,

I fear half the story will remain for next year,

I fear the ink will run out,

But the words will remain,

Days pass like hours,

years pass like days,

Our fear is not of existence,

We fear that time will not stand by us,

We fear reaching the final period without having read,

We fear not living for the tomorrow we dreamed into being,

We fear our notebooks will remain empty forever,

We fear that one day we will no longer be able to write,

We fear forgetting words,

We fear the day when the pages of bookswill no longer remember us,

We are simply afraid!

Our dreams are in flight, Suspended between sky and earth, Like clouds, They cannot stay with us, Nor can they find peace in the sky,

Our lips hum a melody, Meaningless, A melody whose meaning we do not know, We look at the sky, The earth, And ourselves, Nothing!

Like sand, we are escaping through cracks, Even if only a little, "A little place to live, and a little place to die."

Under the heat of the sun, we searched for what was lost,

That lost thing without which we cannot find the bright path,

We are wandering,

We did not succeed, It is not here!

Perhaps one day it will come,

But what a pity, By then, we will be bigger,

And it will be smaller.
